Once, in Frances Slocum State Park, I had the tripod
set up, no focusing rail, with the 100mm macro,
shooting some tiny flowers or spiders that don't
move much, when I was about to give up on getting anything
good. Suddenly, as if to say, "Try
me," a leaf flew from the sky to a nearby
leaf. Not being one to ignore such an
invitation, I lumbered my rig closer and asked,
"What choo got?"

Lands and looks
She lands softly on a leaf and walks close to the edge to let me know
not to be afraid. I agree to the truce and shoot
her. Larger

Turns and peers
Then she turns to look into the camera. Enjoying
the shadow of her smile, I steady for her approach, but
she doesn't come. Still, I capture the moment.

Struts
some stuff
She backs up slowly, then turns to
show her best side and long legs. She's leafing
and wants me to watch. I shutter away.

Looking Back
Then she climbs out on a leaf giving me a
last glance as if to ask, "Are you getting this?"

Off she flys
Thanking her for the dark background, I totally forget
to use the burst mode and miss her; then sulk off, too embarrassed to
call her back. Is there another leaf-in-flight
shot out there somewhere? Larger
